WARNING FOR OUT-OF-STATE DRIVERS: THE TICKET MAY FOLLOW YOU!
Just because you are a resident of another state, do not make the mistake of thinking that the North Carolina ticket will not follow you when you leave. North Carolina and most other states have joined together under the Non-Resident Violator Compact so that a suspended license or a ticket in one state is reflected as a ticket or loss of license in every other state.
If you have an out of state license and fail to appear for a North Carolina ticket or you are convicted of a revocable offense in North Carolina then the North Carolina DMV will notify your home state which will then revoke your privilege to drive in your home state. If you receive a ticket in North Carolina you should appear and handle the ticket so that it is not reported or your home state or is reduced to a violation that will not revoke your privilege.
You may not have to go to court. Our firm provides convenient and quality legal representation to many out-of-state drivers. One of our attorneys will go to court for you and take care of everything. We can send a waiver of appearance to you by e-mail, fax, or regular mail. If you value your time and want to avoid the stress of appearing in court in North Carolina, retaining our firm is a wise investment.
North Carolina has some of the most strict traffic laws in the nation. For example, if you are convicted of speeding 86 mph in a 70 mph zone, you will find that your license will be suspended not only in North Carolina, but in virtually ALL states also.
Non-Resident Violator Compact – North Carolina and most other states and parts of Canada have joined together under the Non-Resident Violator Compact. A license suspension or serious ticket in any member state equals a ticket or loss of license in ALL 44 member states. If your license is suspended in North Carolina, you cannot obtain a license in any of the member states until your North Carolina driving privileges are restored. If you fail to pay a ticket in North Carolina, your driver’s license in North Carolina will be suspended. It is unlikely that you will be able obtain or renew your license in your home state until you have resolved the ticket in North Carolina and had your driving privileges restored.
Most states also exchange information under the National Driver License Compact for serious violations such as DWI’s and suspended license due to unpaid tickets in North Carolina. This means that these violations will be charged against your license in your home state. In some states, even less serious out of state traffic violations are charged against your license. This is where a raleigh traffic ticket lawyer comes in.
